How many mpg are you getting with your tow vehicle? I have a F 150 4x4 with a small 302 engine and a manual. 5 speed trans. I do not know what type of rear end I have (on my truck). If I pull the boat at about 60 - 65 mph I will get about 10 mpg. If I try to pull it at 70 mph the truck seems like it is hitting some high rpms and I get about 8.5 to 9 mpg. If I try to pull in 5 th gear it does not have enough power. This makes for a costly trip to fish. I try to talk my friends into filling the truck up and I fill the boat.

I know some of yall have real trucks (bowties), how do they do at pulling?

The F150 mid 90s had three rear ends with numbers are something like 273, 317 and 355. The 355 comes with the towing package so if you don't have the towing package you probably have the middle number. My F150 has the 273 (special order) with the 5 speed and the 300 in line 6, so gas milage is better but towing stinks. 5th gear is totally useless to me when towing.

I bought my truck about 6 months before I bought my boat so my planning was a little off. I've kept my boat at Yellow Bluff ever since I bought it. You could almost make the tow from the shed to the lift with a Pinto. When you compare $30 a month or so for shed rent to the extra gas you burn and the wear and tear on your truck and trailer it's worth it to me.

I don't do enough towing to tell what the MPG is but I'm betting it's not much over what you're getting. I think your going to find the answer to "how many MPG" will vary between 8 and 16 with factors such as the weight of the boat, driving habits and vehicle setup.

Good point about the cost of renting. I did not realize it was that cheap for a month. Beats the heck out of the $ 100 for getting it down there. How do you wash your boat up when you rent?
coastman
Call Shellman General Store as they rent the sheds are reasonable. As for washing your boat there is a car wash on the right just past Shellman General Store. I will send you the phone number tonight. cool.gif

Yellow Bluff supplies a couple of water hoses for washing/flushing. It is common courtesy to offer the hose to anyone that wants to flush their engine if you are washing out the boat. I've even thought about buying a splitter and a hose so I would be of little a nuicance to my fellow boaters as possible. Besides, I know Mr. Authur can't afford one.

Carman, 2Wishin is right about it being cheaper, not to mention a heck of a lot more convenient, to store your boat. I live in statesboro so it works out well for me. I also keep my boat at YB. biggrin.gif
