I have a 99 GMC suburban, it is now creeping towards 50,000 miles, when I pull the trans. cover and let the oil pour out........ is this the only oil to be drained???? or is there another place to drain the old oil/fluid??? do I drain it at the trans cooler?? do I let the motor run?? Just wondering, I would like to get all the fluid out and put new in... thanks Rob

Rob, I'm know expert but DON"T LET THE MOTOTR RUN. You'll have to drain the tranny cooler as well as the regular tranny oil pan. With new juice in the transmission, the minute bit left will not hurt. I'm sure others wil have more answers.

Hey Rob, Randy is right also as an added bonus some places sell plugs you can install in your tanny pan to make the task easier in the future, I put one on our company truck and never had to go thru all of that mess with the gasket and stuff.

I take it you live near Augusta, I just got a new boat and love to striper fish maybe we can get together sometime I live in Newborn about an hour and 15from exit175 ,also I have a sailboat at Lanier and thus spend most of my fishing time at that zoo.

It varies tranny to tranny but just pulling the pan plug usually gets about 75% of the old oil. The torque converter and cooler hold the rest. One thing I have seen people do is unhook the return line on the tranny cooler and, with the engine running, let the fluid drain until no more comes out of the line. You need another party at the key that will immediately shut the engine off when you yell. The down side to this is that this means the fluid pump runs for several seconds with no fluid. Some feel this is ok, other do not. Another alternative is to change the oil several times so you dilute the old oil with new oil. I would recommend using synthetic oil in any case. If you are towing I would also consider changing the oil more frequently than 50k miles. Personally, I change mine every 25-30k.
Good Luck

The best thing you can do for your transmission is change the filter inside the pan. Places like Xpress lube and other oil change places offer this service. Maybe a little pricey but may be worth it.
You guys wanting to maximize the life of your auto transmissions might want to go to mag-hytec.com. The bigger transmission pans will afford more oil capacity and cooler oil. Thus extending the life of your transmission. You should also get a shop manual for your vehicle and adjust your front bands at each service. The rear band is for reverse so it doesnt seem to need as much attention. Service should be at least every 30k, with a standard size pan. I have heard of many folks that change the filter every other oil change. But they are the ones that have oversize pans and drain plugs.
Good luck
