My dad taught me this one and if any newcomers to the trailering world happen along here, it should help them like it did me.

When backing the trailer, put one hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and grip it there. Whichever way you want the boat to go, that's the way you move your hand. (Hand moves left, boat goes left...) It will become second nature in a very short time.

Back 'em in an catch 'em up!

What is the trick for backing something with a running gear. My father in law wanted me to back the peanut wagon under the shelter one time. After taking about a year off the clutch and wasting 30 minutes I decided to move every thing out from under the shelter and pull through. I think that is the most I ever worked to move a trailer just a few feet.

He also has a 20 something foot trailer for moving round bails of hay. He had it loaded down heavy one day and asked me to drive it to the next field. The gate we had to go through was half way down a hill. I tried to slow down and turn in at the same time, as the tongue turned the way I did the trailer went straight. Within a few minutes I had blocked the road, broke the hay trailer and wasted his time. He had to unload the hay on the road and move the trailer with the tractor. He was so proud of me that day.

carman,
your experience with pulling trailiers sounds like my daughters. We needed new tires on a horse trailier and I did not have time to get to it that day. Tonyail[daughter] was just going to pull it over to the tire store and have them put on,it was only a couple of miles what could possibly go wrong right. She made the first couple of turns fine, the next one her and her mom must have been shopping somewhere. She made the turn with the truck fine, about a 24 ft. gooseneck horse trailier took stop sign down first, trailier went in the ditch, instead of climbing the other side it broke the hitch completly off, before they could get stopped it next took tailgate off the truck. They said they barely felt a little bump.yea Had to get a wrecker to pull trailier out and take it to the welding shop.
Finally got it back and new tires on it,went to a few horse shows and daughter was fine with pulling trailier,so we let her pull it home from the next show. She cut too sharp at our driveway, there was 1[one][[only one bolt on the bottom of the gate] it hit bothhhhhhhh new tires on that side.only 6 inch gash in each tire. Been a couple of years since that time but your story brought back memories.
If she decides to start riding again her dad will probally be pulling the horses. tg
