Looking for input for my 16' fiberglass jon boat. It dont need to be a speed demon. Right now I'm leaning towards a Yamaha 20hp 4-stroke. What ya'll think?

Here's some links to compare prices.
I kinda like my Tohatsu(Nissan) 30hp. It is a 2 cycle. Thrifty on the fuel, real simple engine and easy to work on. Two average guys, a cooler, two batteries and a sandwich or two and it hit 32-33 mph (GPS) with my AlumiCraft Crappie Jon. My son has a 25 hp on his boat, same engine.

"Every motor is brand new in the box sold with all factory warranties these motors will be registered after you purchase them currently this will make them 09's"

These are the type of statements I want to avoid. New in the box, he has a picture of it on the auction page hanging on a boat. I dont think a 2008 motor is registered as a 2009 from an unnamed online seller. This was from Ebay. And he only takes casher checks? No thanks.

Thanks for the links JimmyK. Ed's Marine has the lowest qoute I have seen yet.

20 HP 4-STROKE YAMAHA 15"/20" $2,300

Not bad.

Custom Marine in Statesboro usually can beat Ed's prices on Yamaha. They have for me a couple of times anyway. On a small skiff like that, the power to weitgh ratio of a 2 stroke is an advantage. I'm old school, I like 2 strokes.

With that jon boat I would agree with Cracker Larry. I am still a 2 cycle fan. It will not be long before the 4 stroke will fall out of favor with EPA and it will be mandatory for all boats to have solar powered outboards.

I already knew 2 strokes have better performance but after reading up at Larry's recommend it does look like a 25 hp 2 stroke is a better deal for the $.

20 HP 4-STROKE YAMAHA 15"/20" $2,300 117 lbs
25 HP 2-STROKE YAMAHA 15"/20" $2,400 104 lbs

A solid 15 lbs lighter. cheaper. and 5 extra horse's. Not sure how accurate these prices are though? Everywhere else is much higher. E-TEC's are alot higher. Might have to follow the law of whats whats. Used boat = used motor

Just to clarify, I posted the links just so you could get some pricing ideas. I did not purchase my engine from either. My son did purchase his 25 Tohatsu from an online dealer, he saved about $300 in doing so. Wow... prices sure have went up in the last five years! I would look at the weight of an engine two cycle verses four cycle on your boat. While the 4C will be quieter and use less fuel per HP .....it will weigh more per HP too and that can effect the way your boat operates.
