My friend from Columbia, Sc came down for my Bday i havn't seen him in a few years so I talked him into staying the weekend and we would go fishing on Sunday he said im in. First inshore trip he got to experience a nice 30"red and a 23"er and lost 2 more. I caught 5 trout and 5 reds and broke off one big red. We fished middle 3hrs the outgoing muddy water tide. I caught the trout on a doa natural color paddle tail and the reds on 4" tube baits lathered in procure. He used a popping cork with a rootbeer gulp sm.

You are good Jamie!!!
And your techiques are spot on: Small boat that will get into the bays and creeks. Inexpensive to run (meaning lots of trips without breaking the bank for fuel). Good gear and lures. Hitting the Oyster bars, creeks and cuts on the correct tides. Not afraid of skinny water. Hard work and research that pays off. And you are not afraid to go prospecting in search of new water. Catching the inshore fish like you are doing was a lot more fun to me than runing outside chasing kings or pounding the reefs. Plus way back when I lived there all a person could afford was a small skiff and a 25 Johnson! Once in a while I hitched a ride on a relative's 25 footer to run out to WR2, but most of the time it was prowling the creeks in my 15 foot Willie Harris flat bottom. Keep the photos coming, lets me see the country I grew up in and still love. I recognize some of the areas you show in the photos. Most of our fishing was a red/white balsa float, adjustable sliding bead for depth, double eyelet sinker, about 18 inches of mono leader, about a 1/0 hook. Shrimp for bait (live preferred). Cast near the oyster bar and let the current take it over the submerged oysters. Or run it near the grass if the water was high enough. Sometimes jigs or a mirrorlure or a hot spot. Folks still use the floats and shrimp? Penn 9 and Shakespear Service reels ruled back then. -------------------- "Sweet Georgia On My Mind"

Yes, Silverado, people do still use the same float rig that you described, although the old "float hi glo" brand is no more. Inshore fishing has become much more like freshwater bass fishing with the increasing use of shallow boats and trolling motors. Pitching artificials is not quite as productive for those of us who usually anchor on a drop, but when we can drift with the wind or tide it works well. I don't know anyone who fishes with the Penn 9 anymore, but that is what we grew up on. Tough as nails and easy to service!
You will have to get back on this side of the nation and give it a try again. |
