Guys, I'm looking for suggestions for a place to get crickets and worms real close to Hwy-144 and I-95.
Presently going that direction I'm getting them at Joyners Corner or Pass & Permit. Trying to expand to other locations but too sorry to get in the truck and ride around and look. Names, phone numbers and street addresses would be very helpful, THANKS! |

The only other place I know of in that area is off the 2nd I-95 Richmond Hill exit coming from Savannah (the 1st being 144), south on 17 for approx 1.5miles on the right is a small place next to a computer repair shop. The faded sign out front says Breeze Way, but it can be picked out by the flashing white lights out front. They have crickets, worms and a small selection of tackle.

Benny, heading south on Hwy 17 there is an old gas station with fruit stand. I guess it is about a couple of miles from the I95 and 17 exit. Dont know if this helps, lots of guys who are way more local to Richmond Hill than me can do ya better. I get worms, crickets and big glass bottle Cokes there! Hey, where are you fishing? I wanna go! THANKS GUYS!
Last time I bought in Richmond Hill, Miners at 17 & 144 is where I got them from. Shows you how long ago that was. There was a place a good while back that had just started selling them on 144 almost across from the fish hatchery but it seems like they then later went into selling seafood and then maybe became a beauty salon. I do now remember the place y'all are talking about on 17, from when I used to go to Lake George fishing. blue, I want to go as bad as you do. I've had too much to do and no time to do it. I keep trying to sneak off in the afternoons but keep getting thwarted some how or other. Only been freshwater a couple of times, to Lake Oconee and off the bank of the Canoochee. At least I did catch a few Crappie, Bream and Catfish to pacify me then. Saltwater has been eating my guts out trying to get on decent stuff. Only Sharks, Bluefish and 8-12 1/2" Bass have been willing to give me a kiss. Anyway, this whole thought process of finding bait closer than Larry's, Pass & Permit or Joyner's Corner is due to trying to quickly sneak off to the Canoochee, somewhere to slide a canoe off the bank (before the wife gets home and realizes I'm gone). Just a couple of more modifications, I ought to have the getaway vehicle ready. And this heat in the afternoon ain't helping my attitude much either. Forget live bait, you just need an ultra light spinning outfit and a micro crankbait any color as long as it's white. Get that and put a black beetle spin in your pocket and hide it under the seat in your truck. I have been sneaking to the Ogeechee and doing well...but that heat is rough up in the woods! |

Fishingwithblue and I are talking about the same place and I have to go along with Blue on the ultra light and white crankbait. I had my son (3) out on the Canoochee the other day killing time in the canoe and we had several redbreast and 2 pickeral, one of which is still out there with a white crankbait in his mouth. Most of the crickets I buy go to my sons ever growing (literally) frog collection. Tight lines

Yep, and if you tell him Paul sent you Bubba will charge you double. Bud-Wise-Err fuel tanks and the "Coldest beer in town" sign (despite the fact that he wasn't in any town) where trademark symbols of the Breeze Way. Two questions that you'll want to ask if you do go there for crickets, (1) "Is Tommy still fishing?", and, (2) "Where's Jack?". Bubba will treat you right and you'll come out of there with more culture than when you went in. Paul |

Benny,
Try the feed store at Red Gate Farm. I see they advertise having bait on the sign out front. They are at Chatham Parkway. John |

I got something better than crickets, if you are willing to tie your own. I make a 1/32 oz to 1/16 oz nymph jig that slays the 'gills and shellcrackers. Ties with dark brown mink hair after 3 strands of pheasant for a tail. Looks just like a mayfly nymph in the water. Works better than bait every time. The mink hair is dubbed on. Trim the guard hairs down. I have even caught bass to 7 pounds on them in Georgia. Make yourself a half dozen, and you are set for the day's fishing. Use ultra-lite gear and 4 pound test. Fantastic fun with panfish. Anyone interested, I'll take a photo and send it to you. You can make a dozen an hour cheaper than crickets! I'm too lazy to tie them for you, or I'd sell them. Even caught a 6 pound rainbow on one. They are also deadly on north GA trout. They basically look just like something that crawled out from under a rock. Hard to believe they catch anything, but they are absolutely deadly. Better then a black beetle spin. Just harder to cast, because they are very light.

That's a quarter above the jig. These DO work, yes, better than live bait, and even cheaper because I seldom use more than 2 on a days fishing. Even channel cats eat them.

I've let my artificials collection dwindle down to almost nothing, not sure if I'm just getting sorrier or what.
Used to keep a fair collection of Beetle spins, 1/16oz jigs, poppers and a few sinking flies. You know, come to think of it, for a period of 10-15 years I fished only with artificials (except for hanging catfish lines), before then I used a good mix of live and artificial. Now it seems for the last 5-10 years I've concentrated more on live bait. |
