The gnats seem to be unusually bad right now. Can't enjoy the dock or yard without soaking in DEET. I need about three more large fans too. Does anyone have any home remedies to kill gnats? Googling, I found a machine for $1000 guaranteed to attract and kill every thing. Most machines only kill non-biting gnats, the cheaper models. Besides wind and DEET, what else? I'm not going to spray my yard with poison. County mosquito sprayers have already killed all of the lightening bugs.

I'm asking because I saw a fly trap used in Iraq outside of dining facilities. A liquid that attracted the flies and they died or got stuck in the goo. Amazingly it worked great on flies.

How about a sticky blood goo...lol! Well it just might work. I could probably save some of my blood by cutting my wrists and making a gooey gnat blood trap everyday.

I wish I had a remedy for them, went outside the other day and if you inhaled you got a gnat or two, had to go back in and soak in deet.

Sand gnats, how to get rid of them?
MOVE!!
Sorry, couldn't help it.
You have ruled out most of the effective stuff, about only thing left is to inhale citronella smoke.
The yard spray is effective for a couple of weeks barring heavy rain.
The propane attractor traps do work, you just gotta justify it.
The DEET wipes are best, but be careful not to over do it. I got sick last week from wiping with the 10 hour stuff twice in about 4 hours.
Wind and sunlight are their worst enemies, not to mention temperature. They might show up around 60 degrees but hey they usually leave around 80 degrees, then the mosquitoes show up from 80 to 90.
Try to keep them from eating your eyelids off.
Oh and they do have a sweet taste, when they get in your mouth but you got to crunch them in between your teeth.
Now if you are in a very small area and no breeze, the ThermaCell's work great!

Skin so Soft expedition works pretty good for me and the family. It smells GOOD too. It dosent have any deet so it is safe for the kids. We've been through a whole bottle already this spring. Its use some sort of bug repellent or smoke cigars till they make you puke!

The RHINO Insect Repellent is awesome for the Snad Gnats. It does not have any DEET and it smells alright, too. It is the only stuff I carry. There is a phone number on the side of the bottle.

wd-40 or/and Marlboro Lights don't have to smoke it just light one and hold it, I go thru alot of em when the gnats are bad.

I have been told Bounce dryer sheets tucked under your cap or in a shirt collar will work, tried that and didn't really notice a difference.

There you go, I've only found 2 things they HATE! Smoke and Rhino spray. I may try WD-40 next. They love Deet like kids love candy.

The only way to totally to be rid of sand gnats is to be deceased. Since you don't want to do that I use this remedy. I use 1 gallon pump up sprayer. I mix a bottle of listerine mint flavored mouth wash with the water. I spray everything down. This works for several hours. When I have an outdoor event at Shellmans I spray the ground, shurbbery and everythng else. It is only a temporary fix. Now I also use a good slow burning cigar. That is my favorite remedy.

In Savannah you can get Rhino at River Services and Hester and Zipperer that I know of. Tried the stuff last year, won't use anything else now. Works Great!

Count me in the votes for Rhino Juice, that stuff is like gold. I just wish I could get it in larger bottles!

It seems like DEET really only works well for mosquitoes, not so much for gnats. I've had days using 100% DEET spray where the gnats still bite me, get a mouthful of 100% DEET and die instantly. So then not only am I itchy, but I'm covered in hundreds of dead gnats!

You could go with the old timers remedy- throw a towel soaked in kerosene over your shoulders. Just remember that you will now be highly flammable!!
